Bringing Network Closer to User
Small cells bring greater network capacity closer to the user – where it is needed most to enhance mobile coverage and deliver the best possible experiences. Tomorrow’s HetNets (heterogeneous networks) will incorporate different kinds of small cells (micro, pico, femto, metro cells, relays, and others spanning 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi access technologies), and will be optimized with advanced software features (such as SON, eICIC) to provide much greater performance than what can be achieved by merely adding small cells.
Enterprise and Outdoor Network Densification
More and more capacity is needed at enterprises, stadiums, venues, malls, offices and others. To meet such demand, we need more small cells everywhere. Metrocells, picocells and enterprise small cells at such locations will complement the macro network and will allow denser use of the spectrum. Thanks to interference management and LTE advanced techniques, the overall capacity of these HetNets scales with the degree of densification of small cells (see figure below). Qualcomm is enabling its customers to bring down the complexity of deploying outdoor small cells, enhance small cell performance and management.
Small Cells Inside-Out
Most of today’s indoor small cells are used to improve cellular coverage inside homes and offices. These indoor cells can also be used to provide greater outdoor capacity to those in the surrounding neighborhood. Qualcomm has developed SON techniques that enhance the capacity and performance of such Neighborhood Small Cell (NSC) deployments. Such NSC techniques optimize way small cells interact with one another and with the macro network.
Wi-Fi is an integral part of the wireless landscape – providing fast connectivity for mobile consumers and offloading data traffic from mobile networks. As a leader in 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi, Qualcomm is driving the convergence of cellular and Wi-Fi in small cells to make the best use of available spectrum and enable seamless roaming (with features like Passpoint/Hotspot 2.0).
